FAQs

  • A hybrid kintsugi repair is one that incorporates both traditional and modern materials to modify or alter the curing time for some stages of the repair. As kintsugi has grown in popularity - generally a wonderful thing for a niche craft - it has evolved to include some innovative and interesting methods and materials inspired by traditional techniques, but not strictly ‘traditional’.

For instance, undertaking the assembly of the object using primarily modern materials, while completing the finishing using urushi lacquer as in our Intermediate course, would be considered a hybrid repair technique.

There are many benefits to both hybrid and traditional methods, depending on several factors. We teach you the difference and help you decide what type of repair best suits your object in our Intermediate and upcoming advanced workshops.

  • If you are looking for a short-but-fun and interesting introduction to kintsugi repair, our Beginners workshop is great for getting your feet wet! In 2.5 hours we show you how to complete a modern-hybrid repair using hand-blended French bronze.

If you are looking for a bridge to ease you into using traditional materials, learn all the tools and get an excellent introduction to more complex traditional repairs, our Intermediate day course is perfect for you.

We will be launching advanced long-form repair workshops next year, for those who are interested in going deep with Advanced traditional repair. The best place to hear about those is through our newsletter, so go ahead and sign up.

  • Yes! We definitely encourage you to bring along that piece that you have been dying to repair for ages, but just have not known where to start.

For the Beginners session, we recommend that the object you bring be in no more than 4-5 larger fragments. Repairs in beginners workshops are completed using a modern-hybrid method, so please see the question on food safety for details on aftercare and object use.

You are also certainly able to bring along your own piece for our intermediate repair workshops. However, a break of 3-4 fragments is recommended, without any large gaps. Please reach out at hello@salvagecompany.co.uk with photos and any other questions before your session.

  • For the Beginners workshop cancellation policy, please see our booking page. Generally, you are able to reschedule your session up to 7 days before a session.

Due to the preparation it takes for our longer form Intermediate sessions, we require at least 14 days notice for a full refund. Cancellations of less than 14 days will be eligible for a 50% refund.

No-shows will unfortunately forfeit their booking, and will not be refunded.

We understand that sometimes extenuating circumstances arise, so please reach out as soon as you can if you know you are unable to attend a session. We will do our best to help find a solution.

  • The short answer is that the only type of truly food-grade safe repair is a traditional long-form repair. These repairs use urushi lacquer and gold, both food safe materials when used competently. If you see a ‘food safe’ ceramic repair material of any kind…make sure you take a closer look! Quite often these modern materials are what could be classified as ‘casual food contact safe’ which means if your repair comes into contact with some dry food, for example, its likely fairly innocuous. But you would not want to eat a meal off of it.

We cover this distinction in detail in our Intermediate repair workshop, along with choosing the right kind of repair for your object.
